Congressman Ruben Hinojosa Announces House Democratic Budget Alternative For FY 2012

Press Release

Congressman Rubén Hinojosa announced that Democrats have introduced a budget that presents a plan to strengthen our economy and reduce the nation's deficit without hurting our most vulnerable and strengthening our economy by creating jobs. This is in sharp contrast to the Republican budget plan which strips away Medicare and Medicaid for our Senior citizens and gives tax breaks to special interests groups and the wealthy and slashes important educational programs.

"This budget is about investing in our nation's future by creating jobs and helping small businesses," said Rep. Hinojosa. "We will stand by America's seniors and our most vulnerable of citizens by not dismantling Medicare and Medicaid. We will keep our commitment to our children and grandchildren by keeping Education on the top list of priorities in our nation and thereby keeping America on a competitive level in the global economy."

"President Obama and Democrats are working hard to prevent the elimination of key educational programs such as Headstart for pre-school children and Pell Grants which help low-income and middle class students pay for college," said Rep. Hinojosa. These are programs which have been targeted with huge budget cuts by the Republican budget plan. Democrats are working to protect the Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) nutrition program, while Republicans continue to target the most needy in our country. Democrats are also working to keep our Community Health Centers funded. All of these programs affect thousands of my constituents in Deep South Texas."

The Democratic budget plan does call for cuts in many useful programs without dismantling them.

"There will be cuts, and we know we must tighten our belts in order to get our budget under control and to bring our national debt down, however, the Democratic plan will not devastate our middle class and not pander to the wealthy as Republicans seem so willing to do. The Democratic plan will ensure that the United States of America out-educates, out-innovates, and out-builds the rest of the world. It is our road to success."
